Congratulations to Chelsea Adams Whitby of St Wilfrid's Catholic School for winning the essay competition of our global citizenship project, "Take the Step. Be the Change." Our judges were impressed with her heartfelt and well written work below:

What would I do to help the less privileged with £1,000?

If I were to win £1,000 I would help the less privileged by building as many shelters as possible because the most important thing is to feel safe in your own home and to feel comfort at your own home. These shelters will keep the people warm and dry and will not be just shelters but a home. A home to go to when the day has been tough and a home to keep you warm on a cold day. A home is a place for family and friends to gather and show that they love their company.

I would try to provide blankets and food for the cold and hungry so they can eat and feel safe like we all should. We take things for granted but to see that they would appreciate and have a huge smile that someone has been kind enough to help them would be enough reward in itself. Because no matter who we are or where we come from, we are all the same and we could all use a little bit of help and kindness to get us back on our feet.

I have not met Chelsea when I conducted the student leaders' workshop at their school last October. However, her essay reminds me of what their Assistant Head, Mr Chris Franke, said at that time: "In general, our students are very grateful for what they have and for what is given to them."

With special thanks to Ms Charlie Tibble for encouraging her students to take part in our campaign and be leaders themselves. It is so inspiring to see young people like them go the extra mile to help their less fortunate peers in another part of the world.

St Wilfrid's raised a grand total of £1,249.63 for the building of Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.
